Travel eSIM basics

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital profile stored on your phone that connects you to a mobile network — no plastic SIM card. You buy a travel data plan, receive a QR code or install link by email, and add it in your phone settings before or during your trip.

Nomad Fly sells prepaid international data eSIMs for 200+ destinations. You keep your home SIM for calls and texts, and use the eSIM line for fast mobile data abroad — typically at a fraction of carrier roaming prices.

  • Instant delivery: QR or one-tap install after checkout.
  • No airport queues or swapping physical SIMs.
  • 4G/5G where local networks support it — see plans per country.

eSIM vs physical SIM for travel

Both connect you to a network. For short trips and multi-country itineraries, a travel eSIM is usually simpler and more predictable than roaming or buying local SIMs everywhere.

Common questions

Quick answers about eSIM, devices, and activation. Full list on the FAQ page.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your device that lets you activate a mobile data plan without a physical SIM card. It performs the same functions as a physical SIM for data connectivity. Most phones manufactured since 2018 support eSIM.

How is a travel eSIM different from my carrier’s international roaming?

A travel eSIM is a prepaid data bundle on a local or regional network profile. You pay upfront for a fixed amount of data and validity. Carrier roaming often bills daily or per MB and can get expensive quickly. With Nomad Fly you keep your home SIM for calls/SMS and route mobile data through the travel eSIM line.

Can I store multiple eSIM profiles on one phone?

Yes, on most compatible devices you can keep several eSIM profiles installed, but only one or two are typically active for data at a time depending on hardware. Delete old profiles you no longer need to stay organized.

Are “free eSIM” offers always completely free?

Promotions vary: some apps offer a small trial balance or limited-time data; others require a purchase after signup. Nomad Fly sells transparent prepaid travel data plans — you choose a bundle and pay for that bundle, with clear validity and data amounts.

Is my phone eSIM compatible?
  • Most iPhones from XS/XR onward and many Android devices (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.) support eSIM.
  • iOS: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM.
  • Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.
Can I use an eSIM if my phone is locked?

No. Your device must be unlocked (not restricted to a single carrier). On iOS 14+, go to Settings → General → About and check Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM Restrictions", your device is unlocked.
